A modernized take on a classic puzzle platformer

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a remake of the classic crossover game of the same name. Similar to the original title, players will have to aid Mario as he attempts to recover the Mini-Mario toys taken by Donkey Kong.

While this action game will follow the same platformer format as the first iteration of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, players should expect some mind-boggling puzzles to be thrown their way. You’ll also have to be wary of the obstacles and enemies that’ll prevent you from reaching the Mini-Marios and Donkey Kong at the end of your journey.

Take back the Mini-Marios

For Super Mario fans, the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series has become a beloved franchise that blends the best features of each individual game and creates a thrilling adventure that can appeal to all ages. This remake will continue to bring players the same experience as the original, however, this time it’ll come with a number of tweaks and improvements to elevate the experience into something entirely new.

Players can look forward to optimized 3D graphics that will allow them to fully immerse themselves in the familiar setting. In addition to better visuals, the game has also made improvements to its controls, allowing players to move more fluidly and comfortably—especially when it comes to jumping from platform to platform. The mechanics are also easy enough to pick up, especially for players who have experienced the first version of this game.

Another new feature is the introduction of a local co-op, which will allow you to team up with a friend and work against Donkey Kong together. This feature is particularly helpful when facing the numerous new puzzles and challenges that lie ahead. Unfortunately, though, co-op is limited to a maximum of two players, so it’s not as party-friendly as other Mario titles like Super Mario Kart or Super Mario Party.

With over 130 levels to complete

Fun is virtually endless in Mario vs. Donkey Kong, thanks to the more than 130 levels in eight discrete worlds you need to power through. Each one boasts a different set of obstacles to overcome, although the main objective stays the same: rescue the Mini-Marios. Some levels are clear-cut, while others require more strategy. Utilize the objects in your surroundings to clear each level successfully.

At the same time, some levels are more interactive than others. In these, you will have to guide the Mini-Marios across the screen and into their toy box. Just watch out for the obstacles and make sure they remain as intact as possible. Furthermore, ferocious platformer boss battles against Donkey Kong will transpire at the end of each world you explore.

A familiar game with an all-new feel

Mario vs. Donkey Kong brings on a new experience for players that still makes sure to stay true to its roots. While the game maintains its puzzle-solving mechanics and lighthearted premise, the improved graphics and puzzles with raised difficulty add something new for players to look forward to. The addition of a co-op mode also brings forth more possibilities as you and a friend try to work together to complete the game.

PROS

  • Improved 3D visuals and smoother controls
  • More challenging puzzles and courses
  • Addition of a local co-op mode

CONS

  • Co-op is limited to only two players
